Introduction to Lake Ba Be

Ba Be lake is a set of three interconnected lakes:
Pe Leng, the largest of the three lakes, covering approximately 500 hectares. It is surrounded by limestone mountains and tropical forests, offering an exceptional natural setting. It is connected to Pe Lu by a narrow passage.
Pe Lu is the second largest lake, connected to Pe Leng by a narrow passage. Together, they form the majority of Lake Ba Be. Another passage connects it to Pe Lam.
Pe Lam, on the other hand, is the smallest of the three lakes. Located at the northern end of the lake complex, it is connected to Pe Lu.
In its entirety, Ba Be lake measures about 8 km in length, with a width ranging from 500 to 700 meters and a depth of 20 to 35 meters. Surrounded by limestone mountains and tropical forests, it offers a unique geological setting.

Geology

Ba Be lake is not just a simple body of water. It is the result of a fascinating geological history dating back 200 million years. Over millennia, water has patiently sculpted the limestone, creating a breathtaking karst landscape. Mysterious caves, deep valleys, and fantastic rock formations bear witness to this long artistic work of nature.

Biodiversity

But the true treasure of Ba Be lies in its exceptional biodiversity. Imagine an ecosystem so rich that it is home to no less than 1300 plant species, including several rare tree species and nearly 200 species of orchids. In terms of fauna, there are 82 mammal species, 320 bird species, as well as various species of reptiles and amphibians. The site is also classified among the 20 largest freshwater lakes in the world and has been recognized by UNESCO as a Ramsar site. By joining the very club of internationally significant wetlands, this recognition underlines the crucial ecological importance of this place for the conservation of global biodiversity. Before being designated as a Ramsar site, Lake Ba Be was already recognized in 1995 during the World Conference on Freshwater Lakes, where it was identified as one of the 20 special freshwater lakes in the world requiring protection.
