Nestled in the verdant mountains of Na Ri district, some 80 kilometers from the town of
Bac Kan, the
Kim Hy Nature Reserve is an exceptionally rich natural sanctuary. This protected area of over 14,000 hectares is one of Vietnam's little-known natural treasures, where biodiversity flourishes in all its splendour.

A showcase of biodiversity
Kim Hy's strength lies in the remarkable diversity of its ecosystems, home to a mosaic of species, some of which are endemic to the region. Among the jewels of its fauna, the white-cheeked langur (Trachypithecus delacouri) occupies a special place. This critically endangered primate finds one of its last natural refuges in the reserve's dense forests. Its distinctive silhouette and distinctive coat make it a living emblem of the region's conservation efforts.
The flora is not to be outdone, with the remarkable presence of the tsuga dumosa, a rare forest species whose distribution is limited to the mountainous areas of northern Vietnam and a few neighbouring Chinese provinces. This species testifies to the reserve's importance in preserving Southeast Asia's plant genetic heritage.

Immersive activities and attractions
Kim Hy offers visitors a unique experience of immersion in an unspoilt natural environment. Carefully marked hiking trails wind through primary forest, allowing walkers to discover the ecological richness of the reserve. Every bend in the path can reveal the fascinating spectacle of squirrels leaping from tree to tree, or the rustle of leaves signalling the presence of one of the many species of monkey that inhabit these parts.
For birdwatchers and photographers, the reserve is an ideal observation ground. The diversity of habitats, from dense undergrowth to majestic canopies, offers ideal conditions for observing and photographing wildlife in its natural environment.
Location, access and best times to visit
Kim Hy Nature Reserve covers the communes of Kim Hy, Luong Thuong, Lang San, An Tinh, Con Minh in Na Ri district and Cao Son, Vu Muon in Bach Thong district, in Bac Kan province. Located some 72 kilometers northeast of Bac Kan and 210 kilometers from Hanoi, the reserve borders Ngan Son district to the north. To the east, it borders the communes of Van Hoc, Luong Thanh and Van Minh, while to the south, it is bounded by the commune of Quang Phong and part of Con Minh. To the west, it borders Tan Son commune and the remaining parts of Cao Son and Vu Muon.
To take full advantage of this natural sanctuary, the summer period, from May to July, is particularly favourable. During these months, the drier climate and mild temperatures, fluctuating between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, offer optimal conditions for exploration. Access to the reserve is via picturesque roads through the Vietnamese countryside, adding to the charm of the trip.

Vital ecological importance
Beyond its value to tourism, Kim Hy plays a crucial role in the regional ecological balance. The reserve acts as a living conservatory of biodiversity, protecting endangered species and preserving fragile ecosystems. The various species of primates that live here actively contribute to forest regeneration through their role in seed dispersal and pollination.
Squirrels, of which there are several species, also contribute to this delicate balance as seed dispersers, promoting the natural renewal of the forest. This complex ecological chain underlines the importance of preserving these natural interactions intact.
A future to preserve
The reserve plays a crucial role in the conservation of local ecosystems and endangered species. By protecting these animals, Kim Hy contributes not only to Vietnam's biodiversity, but also to scientific research and ecotourism, offering visitors a chance to observe these rare species in their natural habitat.
Good to know
The Kim Hy nature reserve is preparing to welcome a growing number of visitors thanks to an ambitious tourism development project. The project will showcase an exceptional natural heritage of caves, waterfalls and primary forests. Walking routes will be created to facilitate access to these sites and offer tourists a total immersion in nature. The villages of Lung Sien and Lung Chap will also be integrated into the project to offer a diversified tourism offering.
