The Mac dynasty emerged in 1527 when Mac Dang Dung overthrew the weakened Le dynasty, embroiled in internal struggles. The new rulers of Vietnam were quickly challenged by loyalist Le forces, supported by the powerful Trinh and Nguyen families. The following decades were marked by fierce civil wars, punctuated by numerous alliance shifts and territorial changes. In 1592, pro-Le forces managed to retake Thang Long, driving the Mac to the northern mountainous regions. Despite fierce resistance, the Mac were ultimately defeated in 1677.
It is in this context of turmoil and division that the An Ma Temple was built, dedicated to the Mac mandarins who found refuge in the Ba Be region.

According to legend, after being defeated by the forces of the Le dynasty, some loyal Mac mandarins sought refuge in the Puong Cave, within the current Ba Be National Park. Unable to escape their enemies, they made a tragic decision. Instead of surrendering and facing the humiliation of capture or certain execution, they chose to end their lives in the very cave that had offered them a final sanctuary.
To honor their memory, the local inhabitants decided to commemorate the mandarins. Thus was born the idea of building a temple on An Ma Island, in the heart of Ba Be Lake. However, fearing reprisals from the authorities of the Le dynasty, now in power, the locals had to be ingenious. They decided to name the temple "An Ma," which means "beautiful and peaceful tomb" in the language of the local Tay ethnic group. A name that allowed them to conceal the true nature of the place while preserving its profound significance for those who knew its history.
